Using Satellite-Based Terrestrial Water Storage Data: A Review

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract Land water storage plays a key role for the Earth’s climate, natural ecosystems, and human activities. Since launch of first Gravity Recovery Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission in 2002, spaceborne observations changes terrestrial (TWS) have provided unique, global perspective on human-induced freshwater resources. Even though they become much used within broader Earth system science community, space-based TWS datasets still incorporate important case-specific limitations which may not always be clear to users familiar with underlying processing algorithms. Here, we provide an accessible illustrated overview measurement concept, main available data products, some frequently encountered technical terms concepts. We summarize concrete recommendations how use combination other hydrological or climatological datasets, guidance avoid possible pitfalls. Finally, applications GRACE fields hydrology climate science. This review is written intention supporting future research facilitating satellite-based interdisciplinary contexts.

Assessing Terrestrial Water Storage and Flood Potential Using GRACE Data in the Yangtze River Basin, China

Floods have caused tremendous economic, societal and ecological losses in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) of China. To reduce the impact of these disasters, it is important to understand the variables affecting the hydrological state of the basin. In this study, we used Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data, flood potential index (FPI), precipitation data (Tropical Rainfa...

Gravimetric Geoid Determination by Using Terrestrial and Satellite-derived Data

Being a fundamental vertical reference surface, the use of the geoid is not limited to geodesy/geodetic applications. It is also used, but not limited to, in geophysics (i.e. interpretation of the Earth’s internal structure, solid earth science), geology (i.e. subsurface delineation), oceanography, and mapping/geographic information systems (GIS)/national spatial development infrastructure (NSD...

Using ground-based gravity measurements to monitor changes in terrestrial water storage

Monitoring changes in the Earth’s gravity field for terrestrial water storage change (soil moisture, ground water, snow etc.) is a relatively new and novel concept that has been inspired by the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission. GRACE will soon be providing time varying maps of the Earth’s gravity. However, there has been no field based study to demonstrate that ...

Estimation and Analysis of Precipitable Water Vapor Using GPS Data and Satellite Altimeter

Determination of water vapor in the atmosphere plays an important role in forecasting weather conditions and precipitation studies. For this reason, it is very important to study the tropospheric delay, especially the wet component, which is due to the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere. In this paper, the amount of water vapor was estimated by altimeter satellite radiometer and GPS data...
